Friend of Spiritual

The idea of this project was born when my personal tutor had suggested me to search for a safe place to practice documentary photography. Nothing is as safe as worship places. Since it is difficult to get permitted to photograph in a Mosque in Birmingham, United Kingdom, I headed to Churches, mainly Catholic Churches.

All I needed to say was ”Please, I need help, someone to talk with”. I didn’t know at the meantime that I was talking to Father John. He sent sister Mary who left a tea party just to listen to my problem, welcomed me with a generous smile and motherly talking to me. She gave me a piece of chocolate when she knew that I hadn’t eaten well on that day.

I asked if she needs an evidence, any written letter from school. Then she said: “ I believe in God “.

The church visitors didn’t leave a chance to shake hands with me and chat. I was impressed by their hospitality and friendliness along with modesty.

I had a cup of coffee with a cake portion and sat with Sister Marry and Helen who is a scholar interested in Catholicism. She talked proudly about how many Muslim friends she got. They both agreed that we have the same God, and we should all amplify similarities in order to save the world.

When I went to put my cup back in the kitchen, I overheard them talking about me, saying:”She’s a nice girl. Oh yes She is..”

That moment I realized that I’ve gained new friends. And this won’t be my last visit. But next time, I’ll come to them camera-free just to say hellos and peace.
